Parents! Looking for a unique educational activity for your child’s after-school, preschool, homeschool, scout, or play group? You can schedule LHS science and mathematics single-visit workshops and multi-session courses at custom times and dates. Your child’s group will enjoy courses like those listed here.

Getting to Know Animals

Your child will pet furry rabbits, make a playground for a rat, learn what toads eat, and build a ladder for a snake to climb. Together you and your child will hold, feed, and get to know the Biology Lab animals. Make an animal project to take home each week.

Animals and Their Young

From a 300-pound baby elephant, to a nest of tiny newborn mice, to an emperor penguin chick that hatches in frozen Antarctica, animals and their young are truly amazing. Join us as we explore some interesting parenting behaviors in the animal world through stories, games, dramatic play, craft projects; and by holding live animals.

Science Toys

Come join the science fun as we learn about the properties of the physical world by inventing toys. Explore color mixing; and make a rainbow wand filled with incredible, super-absorbent crystals. Learn about gravity and inclines by constructing a marble runway. Invent your own recipe for play dough—complete with color and sparkle. Make a project to take home each week. If you have a curious mind and like to play, this is the class for you.

Tails and Whiskers

You and your child will meet friendly Biology Lab animals—one that flies, and one that swims. We’ll pet them, feed them, and even see one of them take a bath! Students make an animal project to take home each week.

Wind, Water, and Wheels new!

Get on board with this exciting class for young children who like to figure out how things work. Explore ramps and pathways, water flow, and air dynamics. Materials invite children’s interest and experimentation and help them formulate cause-and-effect relationships. Take home materials to continue playing and investigating at home.

Physical Science for Curious Kids

A variety of simple games and activities introduce children to topics such as electricity, magnetism, and properties of air and light. Young scientists make kits, magnetic toys, and light circuits to take home. These activities stimulate questions in young minds and foster an intuitive framework for later science learning.

Bugs, Beetles, Butterflies

Did you know that there are more than one million different kinds of insects? Learn to recognize some insect friends—and enemies—of your garden, and follow their life cycles from egg to adult. Their shapes, color patterns, behavior, and growth will amaze you. We’ll watch insects crawl, hop, fly, wiggle, and swim; and might even let some tickle us.

Springtime Biology

Spring is a special time of year for plants and animals. Join us in planting seeds, learning about animals that hatch from eggs, and using nets to find creatures in the pond. Get to know the animals in the Biology Lab, and go outside to explore nature.

Colorful Science

Open your eyes to a world of color that features a “rainbow” of science activities. Use leaves, branches, rocks, and mud to camouflage real turtles, lizards, and insects. Visit the planetarium with an astronomer to look for stars of different colors, and experiment with mixing colorful concoctions in the Chemistry Lab.

Science You Can Eat NEW!

Mix, measure, and create your way to becoming a great science chef. See what happens when you mix different ingredients together and then taste the results. Our wholesome recipes are designed so that children can follow them on their own; the recipes provide lots of opportunities for experimentation. Sticky fingers and playing with your food are part of the fun!

Lego Builders NEW!

Use our Lego sets to learn all about structures such as towers, walls, and bridges. Your inventions become even more amazing when you add moving parts such as pulleys and levers. Each class starts with a fun story that introduces a challenging problem to solve. Then it’s up to you and your fellow engineers to work together to figure out your own solutions. There’s an engineer in all of us!

Blocks, Beams, and Bridges

If you love building, join us as we construct bridges and build with a variety of materials that include geoblocks, constructo-straws, toothpicks, and marshmallows. Find out how the Golden Gate Bridge stands up by testing our four-foot-tall model. Experiment with strength, structure, and geometry. Become a skilled builder.

Stirring Up Science

Become a mad mixer, and turn everyday substances into your own weird concoctions. Change solids to liquids and back again, and experiment to discover the identity of alien goo. Get ready for some science surprises as you explore familiar and mysterious substances. Make crystals, soap, a density rainbow, and other creations to take home. (This class contains activities from Weird Concoctions and Slime and Slippery Stuff.)

Ancient Egypt NEW!

Travel back to the time of mummies, pharaohs, and pyramids. Learn how ancient Egyptian architects, scientists, and mathematicians built such an amazing civilization. Write secret messages with hieroglyphics, make papyrus and sun-dried bricks, build model pyramids, and learn the scientific secrets of ancient mummification.

Lego Engineering

Discover your inner engineer as you design, build, and create with Legos! In this class you will build simple machines—like levers, pulleys, gears, and wheels—and explore ways to use them to solve challenges and do the work for you. You can use your new engineering skills to combine these simple machines and to build your own creation.

Science Club

Use Lawrence Hall of Science as your laboratory to explore ideas and design an investigation! During this class, students will conduct experiments as a group and begin thinking about the process of experimentation. Choosing from a menu of topics within physics, biology, and chemistry, students can pursue their interests by using laboratory materials to experiment over several sessions. In Science Club, students can turn their curiosity into an understanding of the world around them.

Zoom, Twirl, and Fly

Come explore the forces that make things go and stop, fly, and twirl. Construct and tweak a catapult, and make it hit the mark. Design the best parachute for keeping an egg safe. Through different projects, experiment with the principles of force and motion and discover your own creativity as engineers.

Lego Technology
