Families and Schools Project Of Northern California

Community Involvement

The Ocean Immersion™ Month is a special occasion for parents and teachers to reach out to community resource agencies and local businesses. The invitation to participate in this special event strengthens the connections between the school and the community, enriching students' experiences and developing relationships that support effective education throughout the school year and beyond.

Teachers identify local field trip sites and informal science education groups with resources that will enhance their students' learning in a variety of subjects. They also find out about local professional development opportunities.

This cross-community collaboration often results in local agencies learning how to shape their offerings to support teachers and their educational goals. Working together, university science departments, science museums, environmental educators and schools foster a partnership for strong science education.

Local businesses also appreciate the opportunity to contribute to education programs in their community. Through contact with local working adults and employers, students explore career paths.

Sharing an Ocean Immersion™ with local teachers and students helps local community members identify their important role in improving school quality and supporting educational reform efforts.

Everybody wins!
