![]() About Families & Schools™The MARE Families & Schools™ project uses month-long, whole-school immersion experiences to improve science teaching and learning by bringing together teachers, students, administrators, parents, and community organizations. The project is beginning with elementary schools in the area of Eureka, California. Each school's participation in the project is shown with a calendar and photo galleries. Key features of the Families & Schools™ project include teacher professional development, parent involvement, community involvement, fieldtrips, and school-wide events. During the summer, a Leadership Team of teachers and parents from each participating school joins the experienced hands-on science professional developers from the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS)for an Ocean Immersion™ Leadership Institute in Berkeley, CA. Each Leadership Team returns to their school and works with teachers and parents to plan and execute an Ocean Immersion™ Month. The Ocean Immersion™ Curriculum uses hands-on marine science activities as an exciting entrypoint to powerful learning experiences in reading, writing, art, and community involvement.
An innovative approach to transforming science instruction in rural schools. |
