Lawrence Hall of Science presented interactive Medical Mystery Festival to Black Pine Circle School fourth- and fifth-graders on April 11, as part of a collaboration the hall and school have developed to increase interest in family health education.
Students got to "test drive" displays at 12 different medical stations, where participants could listen to their heartbeats using stethoscopes, take their temperatures, conduct eye vision tests, and participate in other activities.
Students gather data to determine what illness pretend-patients have. Students also record the descriptive symptoms of each particular patient. The learning stations use actual medical equipment, such as stethoscopes, breath-flow meters, and temperature strips. From all the clues about patients' symptoms, students practice being health practitioners and try to diagnose their illnesses.
Black Pine Circle, which was founded in 1967 and has an elementary and middle school level, will continue to trial test science curriculum from Lawrence Hall's Family Health Unit in the coming years. It also plans to offer the festival to its upper school.
Lower-school science specialist Willy Chen has been working with the hall's Family Health unit staff and has trial-tested much of the curriculum being developed by the Family Health Unit.
The trial-test will help the hall determine what to keep in its family health curriculum.
