A perfect evening of Science Under the Stars: drinks overlooking the Bay, a planetarium show, and dinner and conversation with Lawrence Hall of Science’s Alan Gould, Director of the Holt Planetarium and Planetarium Activities for Student Success; and Gibor Basri, UC Berkeley Professor and Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion.
Alan Gould has worked with the Hall since 1974 and, among his many accomplishments, he contributed to the development of the Hall’s outstanding reputation as the innovator of audience-participation planetarium shows. Partnering with Alan is Vice Chancellor Basri whose work in the 1980s concentrated on star formation and the study of T Tauri stars and stellar activity. In the past decade he became an early pioneer and world expert in the study of brown dwarfs. He has served as a Co-Investigator for the NASA Kepler Mission (the search for Earth-size planets in habitable zones of other stars), for which LHS is also a co-lead institution for Kepler Education and Public Outreach. In addition, Basri became increasingly involved in science education, and in encouraging the participation of minorities in science. His efforts in this, and on behalf of increasing diversity at the University, were recognized by the Chancellor’s Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence in 2006. In 2007 he was selected by Chancellor Birgeneau as the University’s very first Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion. The stimulating and elegant dinner for twelve will be catered by the renowned Grace Street, with a wonderful case of red/white wines provided by Gundlach Bundschu Winery. Dates to be mutually agreed upon by all parties. Expires May 9, 2010.
