Grace Dávila Coates

Grace Dávila Coates is Director of FAMILY MATH/Matématica Para La Familia, a program of EQUALS at Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS). She is co-author of the FAMILY MATH for Young Children book that targets families with children in preschool to second grades and co-author of the upcoming sequel to the classic FAMILY MATH book. She is Co?Project Director of the Bridges to Excellence: Achievement in Mathematics (BEAM) Project, a collaboration of the EQUALS program, Mathematics Case Methods at WestEd, the Alameda County Office of Education, West Contra Costa Unified School District, and a consortium of school districts in Imperial County. Coates also coordinated the English Language Development Institute in Mathematics Content (ELDI-MC) in collaboration with the California Mathematics Project at the University of California, Los Angeles; and Oakland, Fremont, San Leandro, West Contra Costa, and Hayward Unified School Districts. This institute is part of the Governor's Professional Development Initiative to enhance teachers' content knowledge of mathematics and enables them to become proficient in their knowledge and application of the ELD Standards. Before joining the EQUALS staff in 1991, Coates was a preschool and elementary classroom teacher and staff developer in Hayward Unified School District for 12 years. She received her B. A. from California State University at Hayward, California in Liberal Studies with a Cross Cultural emphasis.
