Jacqueline Barber is Associate Director of the Lawrence Hall
of Science and leads the Curriculum, Research and Development
Division and the LHS Center
for Curriculum Innovation. She is also the founding Director
of the Great Explorations in Math and Science
(GEMS) Program through which she has authored or co-authored
numerous inquiry-based mathematics and science curriculum units
and pedagogical handbooks, including Crime Lab Chemistry,
Bubble-ology, Chemical Reactions, Acid Rain, Terrarium Habitats,
Learning About Learning, Dry Ice Investigations, and The
Architecture of Reform. Barber has directed and presented
a variety of professional development institutes and intensive
workshops for teachers and educators nationwide, including
the Primary Leadership Institute in Science and Mathematics
(PRISM). She has extensive experience in establishing national
and regional curriculum implementation networks to support
reform in math and science education. Her growing interest
in the role of parents in their children's education led her
to expand her work to include the promotion of parent involvement
in schools and at home. As part of this effort, she authored
the book Parent Partners: Workshops to Foster School/Home/Family
Partnerships (2000) with L. Bergman and L. Barakos. Barber's
educational background includes a B.A. from Hampshire College
in Human Physiology and a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct
neuroendocrine research at l'Institut d'Histology at the University
of Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France.
