Updates for SEPUP Modules

From time to time, we update our instructional materials based on reports from teachers, unanticipated changes to equipment, or errors that have been brought to our attention.

When this happens, we post corrected versions on our website as downloadable pdf files which can be opened and printed with Adobe Acrobat Reader. These revisions are included in subsequent editions of our materials.

Current updates:

Hazardous Materials Investigations: The Barrel Mystery

Investigating Energy from the Sun

Investigating Environmental Health Risks

Investigating Food Safety

Solutions and Pollution

Thresholds and Toxicology

Waste Disposal: Computers and the Environment

Hazardous Materials Investigations: The Barrel Mystery

Activity 8
The last two Procedure steps and the Analysis questions are missing from p. 86. Please download and print the following replacement page and use it as the master for this student page.

Investigating Energy from the Sun

Activity 3
Some teachers did not get results that were consistent with those presented in the book, so we re-tested the window films and re-wrote several of the student questions to better address the variety of results your students may find. While some students may clearly see evidence for the existence of IR waves, we believe the new questions do a better job of directing those students with other results towards this conclusion.

Energy Activity 3 replacement pages

Activity 4
Transparency 4.1, "The Electromagnetic Spectrum," is incomplete in its black and white version on paper and on the transparency provided. (The file on the CD is OK and may be printed in color.)

Evidence and Trade-offs (ET) Scoring Guide
Please use this scoring guide only as it appears in Activity 3 on p. 47 as Transparency 3.3. The version that appears in Appendix C: Assessment on p. 124 is incorrect.

Investigating Food Safety

Activity 6
We received reports from teachers using this module that the dilute iodine solution degrades over time. The kit has been modified to include a concentrated iodine solution to be diluted by the teacher and we have revised the Materials and Advance Preparation accordingly. Please contact Lab-Aids for ordering information.

Food Safety Activity 6 replacement pages

Solutions and Pollution

We learned that there was an error in Analysis Question 5 in Activity 1, the Serial Dilution template in Activity 5 (Student Sheet 5.1), and in the water drop art on p. 120 in Activity 8. Download the following file, print it, and use the pages to replace those currently in your module.
